The Way It Works…
Volunteers for Feeding Kids Ministry fill their stomachs with food and let them see the hands, feet, and face of Jesus, for it is in His name that we serve them.
Who
Over 240 elementary, junior high, parochial schools, and high school children in the Alpena and Hillman areas who are fed during the week with school breakfasts and lunches, but may not have an adequate supply of food on the weekends during the school year. School staff identifies these students and gives us the number of packets their school needs each weekend. There is no application process and we don’t know the names of the children, but simply provide them with a gift of food for the weekend.
What
Supply food for the weekend to these children. This food is non-perishable, nourishing, cost-effective, and easily prepared by the child. The food is purchased with money donated directly to the ministry and is not used for any other purpose.
When/Where
Each Friday during the school year in Alpena and Hillman elementary schools, parochial schools, Thunder Bay Junior High, and Alpena High School. The current cost to feed one child each weekend is approximately $4.00 for a total of $192.00 for an entire school year.
How
The food is put into a gallon sized plastic bag and distributed to each child with a simple note identifying the ministry and a contact phone number. The high school and junior high have a food pantry which meets their needs.
Why
By providing this food, these children come to school better prepared to learn and more likely to grow into sustainable positive lifestyles.
